“Andre's skill and empathy with the music whatever the genre shows his ability to get inside the music and capture the heart of the piece. People who know him know that this is what sums up Andre — the person and the musician.”
Andre Mendes da Costa is a classically trained pianist who has performed as a solo artist and with bands in New Zealand and Australia for more than 30 years, including a period with the Brisbane-based Backstreet Blues Band and Taupo-based Good Grief during the 1980's.
An experienced band keyboardist and vocalist who has performed in groups playing from blues, new romantic, rock, and soul to R&B, Andre's strength and focus as a solo artist is on adult contemporary music, with an emphasis on bossa nova, light jazz, soft rock ballads, and popular music from the early 20th century to modern day.
Andre can provide an evening of entirely instrumental easy-listening piano music, or an instrumental-vocal and rhythmic mix with an additional session musician or two, according to what suits the occasion and your budget.
Andre has received invitations to work at international luxury resorts in Dubai and South East Asia, as well as opportunities to join the cruise ship entertainment circuit, but for family reasons he has chosen to remain in New Zealand and currently resides in Masterton, having moved there from Wellington in 2003.
Today Andre is sought after for his live solo piano work in the Wairarapa and Wellington regions, and he is a popular choice for weddings and corporate functions. As a session musician he has also worked with various musicians in live settings and on recordings.
Since his move to Masterton, Andre has featured in a number of high-profile public functions, including Wairarapa’s annual Bride of the Year. In 2014 he also featured among the line-up of local artists performing at the popular Iberia Restaurante with the introduction of his new trio A Little Taste of Rio performing a blend of nostalgic bossa nova and light jazz.
